Reflective Analysis - Daniela

I felt that communication was key in this assignment and it is something both Hannah and I worked well at. We managed to keep contact throughout the project and helped each other along the way.

We chose our artist, Eduardo Recife, as we instantly liked the way he created his images and therefore felt that we could interpret them in a way that could fit around a good narrative. The way he blocked out the characters eyes stood out and we felt we could use that in our project relating to how the characters felt.

We created seven strong images, without having a narrative. Through communication we were able to come up with good images and give each other some feedback to help each other either creating a new image or adjust a few. I took control of the image side of the project making sure all the images were completed on time and also making sure they all fit in well together.

Our soundtrack was recorded in a studio, Hannah recorded her voice and I took control of the voice levels and then Hannah edited the soundtrack, which has come out really well, and fits in nicely with the images we had created.

I feel things could have worked better if we had come up with a narrative first and then worked on the images as things could have worked out a lot easier, however we worked well as a team and managed to get everything completed and to a good standard.

Overall I feel the project went really well, the workload was shared out equally and we worked well together. We documented everything down on the blog and regularly checked to see if the other person had updated anything on it and worked from that. I am pleased with our final piece as everything fits together well.

Reflective Analysis of work - Hannah

I feel that me and Daniela have managed to create seven well-designed images and a strong soundtrack which really work together to tell a story and to reflect our chosen artist.

In regards to our chosen artist I feel that we managed to embody his work well, we used montage techniques and the use of pen/pencil scribbles within our final images which makes our work fit that of Eduardo Recife's. The extensive research we had done beforehand on Eduardo really helped us to get his vision for the images, by combining the use of old fashioned images and new contemporary backgrounds, along with montage techniques and hand-drawn scribbles on top of the images to create meaning and help the audiences understand the characters within the images. Overall I am really happy with how all of our images ended up, they all look cohesive and work well together.

The soundtrack which I created was made using Adobe Audition, I recorded myself talking the narration and then manipulated it by adding different sound effects and a faded soundtrack underneith. I am pleased with my finish soundtrack but I do feel that I could have done more research into sound beforehand to make the soundtrack creation process a lot easier for myself, as I would have known exactly what sounds I was looking for and what mood I wanted to create, It would have given me more of a focus.

One thing I do think that I could have improved on is the narrative of our images, I feel that we focused a lot on the creation of the images that the narrative got lost along the way, we could have spent more time developing a stronger narrative before we created the images which would have added to our overall project.

I feel that me and Daniela really worked well together and shared the work equally, with her taking more control over the image creating process and me with the sound, to make sure we completed all the work on time, we had good communication throughout all the project and bounced off each others ideas and creations.

Overall I am happy with this project and the end result, I am proud with what we managed to create, espesically our images as I am really pleased with how they all turned out and fit together well with our soundtrack to create a narrative.

Sound

Sound Plan

Me and Daniela went down to the studio to record our narration on April 20th, we managed to successfully record our pre-planned narrative which I then took back home to manipulate.

To manipulate our soundtrack I used Adobe Audition which I then cut up our narrative and proceeded to find sound effects and music tracks online. I managed to find a lot of good clips online, my favourite websites for sound finding were:
I decided to use Adobe Audition as I had learnt how to use the program previously during one of our assignments. I was accustomed to the program and enjoyed using the software. Once I had all my sounds I then played around with the fading in and out of the clips to create an effective piece. As you can see form the screenshot below of my work in Adobe Audition.

Once my soundtrack was complete I then exported it and imported it to Adobe Premier.

Script

Here is a copy of the script which we will be narrating over the various images.

Script:

Image One:
Life used to be great, my twin sister, my mum, my dad and I.

Image Two:
When my dad walked out, my mum raised us as well as she could, however everyone was happy.

Image Three:
It wasn’t till mum married again that life really began to change. My sister and I knew something wasn’t quite right.

Image Four:
Then things really did change. He just stood there and watched.

Image Five:
A week after losing mum, we re-entered the house, in hope to find the cause of the fire. We found a key beside a wooden box, which was filled with peculiar things.

Image Six:
Mum and dads wedding cake topper, an old penguin that had been passed down generations… in my father’s family and lastly a piece of wood which we found whilst walking through the woods on our first family holiday. It looks like mums memory box, one thing the fire didn’t burn.

Image Seven:
He knew he couldn’t replace my dad, jealous is all he ever was. Starting the fire took our mother however the memories will always remain.

Update: Image #5

I have decided to update image number five as I feel it looks slightly out of place with our other images.  To update this image all I have done is add words and scribbles over the eyes of the girls to stick with the conventions of Eduardo Recife's work.

The updated version is below:

Created Image #3

The second image I have created is to show the family dynamic, here we see the family before the fire. The mother happy while the 'lies' over the mans face suggests something different. The shoe on top cake (which was found after the fire) also suggests that it was a topper from the wedding cake.

Created Image #6

Here is an image I have created to show the twins opening the box and there feelings towards the events which have just occurred. I have tried to keep my images in style with our artist Eduardo Recife.

Updated: Created Image #4

Here is an updated version of the image created before, I felt the speech bubble was irrelevant and made it look childish. I also added in texture of burnt paper which symbolises the fire.

Photoshop Fire Experiments

Here are some examples of fire images and text which I created in Photoshop. I used online tutorials to help me create these pieces and as you can see some were more effective than others. The skills I picked during this lesson will help me when creating my final 12 images for my explorations project.

Synopsis/Story

After the tragic house fire which killed their mother two twin girls revisit their old home in hopes of piecing together what happened that night. Will the items they discover help them to uncover the truth about what really happened that night?
An old key is discovered lying next to an old box, the wedding cake topper from her mothers marriage to the twin's step dad is lying next to it. Inside the box a piece of drift wood is found and also a wooden penguin which was the twin's mothers pride and joy.

Eduardo Recife - Chosen Artist

Eduardo Recife
We have chosen the artist Eduardo Recife to base our project on.

Some examples of his work are below:

All Thats Going To Be Left Is Dust
Everything we know is dust

Waiting
Waiting

Dream

We particularly like the way his work uses a collage approach, with layered photographs/text and then hand-drawn scribblings over the top. We also liked the way he used vintage style photographs within his illustrations.

Information about Eduardo Recife
  • He is an artist, illustrator, typographer and graphic designer from Brazil.
  • He does freelance work for professional clients and also sells his personal works to galleries or to individual clients upon request.
  • Recife's illustrations have a characteristic vintage feel and an old-era style.
  • He started his website in 1998 as a place to distribute typefaces and also experiment with collages and drawings.
  • In 2002 he started to work full time as a freelance illustrator.
  • "I always loved to draw, since childhood. Later on when I was around 15, I really got into tagging and graffiti. I didn't get to do much in the streets, but it was my first love with type. Later on I found some people working with digital typefaces, in the 90's with the whole grunge scene happening at the time. I really identified myself with everything: the music, graphics and feel of it."
  • "I think vintage graphics are much more beautiful than what we have right now. I think everything was more poetic and well done. The magazine covers, the posters, prints… Seems like one had to be very talented to work on the field, since there wasn't a lot of computer help at that  time. Today things are much more mechanical and cold. Everything screams photoshop; the treated photos, the images, the type. I enjoy the handmade feel of vintage images and how they carry the traces of time... But I think that apart from this I probably was influenced by either artists from the early 1900's (dada) or from artists that were using vintage material in their collages."
